Teach Your Child to Read!

I was quite successful in teaching my own children to read.  Matt was reading well by age 5 and Blake by age 4.  So I thought I'd share some of the techniques that helped me teach them.

Here is a simple little trick for parents to help you teach your child to read in a fun and painless way. Surprisingly this will even work with very young children and will help get them interested enough to sit still for a story. All you need to do is to make sure that the print is large enough for them to see the letters very clearly - about an inch to two inches high.  Otherwise you can choose any book that you think would appeal to them.

When you sit down to read your story, determine ahead of time several words you want your child to "read". Names of characters or other words that are repeated frequently in the story work best. It doesn't matter if it is a short word or a long one, in fact a longer word is easier to recognize because it is a more unique pattern. The first time you come to the designated word in the story, point to it and say the word clearly. Then each time you come to that word, simply pause, point to the word and look at your child expectantly. You may have to prompt them a couple of times, but they'll catch on very quickly and they'll learn to recognize "their" words. At the end of the story, praise them and give them a big hug, then put the book away.

The next day, they will likely BEG to read the same book. Let them read the same words and add two or three new ones. By the time they get tired of the book, they will have learned at least 8 to 10 new words and will be able to recognize them in other books as well. Don't repeat a book more than 3 times and don't "test" them.  Just believe that they know it and they will demonstrate it to you in time.  Kids learn shockingly fast and will be happiest with fresh material every 2 or 3 days.  Keep this up and before you know it, your child will be reading confidently and easily.

Here is another trick I used to get my older child to enjoy reading. When he was 7 or 8, Matt could read quite well, but he wasn't particularly interested in books. So I went to the library one day and picked out a few books I thought he would enjoy (I think they were R.L. Stein's Goosebumps books). Then I casually dumped them next to him in the backseat of the car and said the magic words "Don't touch those, they're your brother's". Problem solved! He nearly ripped the covers off them, he read them so fast!

I think he ended up reading nearly every Goosebumps book the library had on the shelves and by the time he hit High School, his scores were in the top 3 to 5 percent in the nation on his reading comprehension.  Blake has been reading at a college level since about 7th grade.  I know teachers do their best, but with overcrowded classrooms and ridiculous mandates from the Government, I wasn't about to leave anything to chance.  And, at least in our case it seems to have worked out pretty well.

If you want more information on this method, there is a book you can find at any library or bookstore, in virtually any language or country in the world.  It's called Teach Your Baby to Read by Glenn and Janet Doman.

Joe, the Almost Movie Star

OK, we got the weirdest call the other day.  Someone wanted to cast our DOG in a local movie.  Apparently, this lady had run into Joe and my husband at the local hardware store and mentioned that she knew someone who supplied animals for movies.  He just thought she was kidding, but apparently he gave her our number anyway.

Turns out they were casting for a local low-budget film called "The Twelve Dogs of Christmas" and they wanted a St. Bernard for one of the lead parts.  She had us call a lady and Email them some pictures and info about him.  Then they wanted to set up an audition for him.

It was so weird trying to explain to all our friends that we had an audition for a dog.  But they were offering about $200 a day, so we were pretty excited about the opportunity.  Joe passed his interview with flying colors, mostly.  He got along well with the female dogs, the handlers, and the kids they were testing with, but had a little tension with the other male dog that was set to play the other main lead.  They weren't fighting or anything, but they weren't the best of friends either.

We've had our fingers crossed all day hoping to hear that he'd gotten the part.  But sadly, one of the other dogs got the part, although we heard from an insider that he hadn't tested as well with the female dogs and the kids, but I guess getting along with the other male lead was the key - boo!

I'm still holding out hope that the other dog won't work out for some reason and they'll call Joe in after all, but I guess Joe will just have to have his shot at the big screen some other time - sigh.  In the meantime, we'll start having him practice for signing his paw-tographs!

Guest Posting at Parenting by Dummies

Funny that my last post was about my adventures with the SITS Girls because on my very first SITS adventure in Las Vegas, I met Amanda from Parenting by Dummies.

You may have seen her a few months back on What Not to Wear when she got the full makeover treatment and learned a whole new way of dressing.  We became friends because we are both triple dude mothers - she has her little dudes and I have my mustache dudes, so she is featuring me as her Monday Dude Mom.  (I think that sets a record for how many times I've used "Dude" in a sentence).  C'mon over to Parenting by Dummies and have a peek.

Hanging with the SITS Girls

If you've read my blog for any amount of time, I'm sure you've heard me mention the SITS girls.  They run one of the largest sites in the blogging world, and I'm one of their biggest fans.  They not only offer tons of blogging tips and other ideas, but they choose a featured blogger every day and send a boatload of bloggers by to visit and explore her site.  I've had a couple of SITS days and they were my highest traffic days by far!

One of the best things they do is to run live blogger events around the country.  I've been to three of them, so far and it is unbelievable how awesome these events are.  You really get a lot of energy in the room when you get a hundred or so energetic bloggers together at one time!  And it's a great way to build some terrific friendships.  I went to my first event over 2 years ago and I'm still in touch at least every week or so with some of the ladies I met there.

To find out more about the Bloggy Boot Camps, click over to the BloggyBootCamp.com site to see what cities they'll be held in this year.

Tomorrow is Bloggy Boot Camp day, so of course, I'm playing along.  They are giving away a ton of prizes including a Coach purse, an Oreck vaccuum, and a chance to win a free trip to the Bloggy Boot Camp of my choice - woohoo!

In the meantime, here are links to some of my best SITS-related posts:

My Feature Story on The SITS Girl Site

It's been a fun ride with these gals and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.  It's also opened doors to so many opportunities in the blog world, to meet people, to guest post, to win stuff, to learn how to do just about anything worthwhile in the blogging world, and they've probably brought me at least half of the Followers I have for my blog.  I'd encourage you to pop over and join the site and get signed up for your chance to be to be the daily Featured Blogger.
