Having Fun and Getting Fit with the Striiv Unit
I have discovered the cutest little gadget lately and even better, it is helping me get fit and give a little to charity at the same time. The Striiv is a little keyfob sized pedometer that fits in your pocket, clips to your belt, or hangs on your keychain. It's brand new on the market and I got to be one of the first ones to test drive (or test walk!) it.
I like my Striiv unit because as it is counting your steps, it is also giving you incentives to take more steps. As you walk, run, or climb stairs, you are earning points. These points earn different awards throughout the day. It will tell you if you've earned enough points to wipe out a cupcake, or a small order of fries, for instance. Some days it tells you, you have walked across the Golden Gate bridge (1.7 miles) or something. Or it will tell you that you've beaten your average from yesterday, or last week. That's much more motivating than just doing a boring 10,000 steps a day most programs want you to do. It's like having the power of a marathon in your pocket.
You are also earning points towards a charitable donation. Every day you have a chance to earn a small donation towards your favorite charity. Mine is Clean water, but there are several to choose from. Striiv and several of it's partners make the donations for you based on your step count. Walk more to give more. I think I did 3 or 4 donations in my first week and it's nice to see them add up.
My favorite part is the game. There's a little video game built right into it and as you go through the day, you earn points to play the game. Its actually a lot of fun and some aspects of the game are pretty challenging. Some of the challenges are easy 5 minute ones, but for some of the bigger ones, you have to save up your points for several days and use them strategically. Some days I found myself taking a few extra turns up and down the stairs to get those few extra points for an animal or plant I wanted to add to my game.
What it all boils down to is building motivation and I think that is the real challenge when it comes to exercise. Unless you make it fun and enjoyable, it isn't going to get done. And this is a simple, hassle free way to do it. This would make a nice holiday gift for someone - perfect for the busy Moms in your life. HSN is offering it for 3 payments of $33.31 - includes extra screen protectors, belt clip, and keychain attachment.
Here's a video that shows that Striiv unit in action.
Disclaimer - I received a Striiv unit for my personal use, but as usual, my opinions are my own.

That's very cool...I think it would be fun to walk and know what I walked in a day for instance...ie: the Golden Gate Bridge. ;)
